HOW TO DEAL WITH HOT FLUSHES IN MENOPAUSE

It’s no secret I’m in the Menopause, I’ve been openly sharing my journey with you since it began. In fact, Menopause is an entire category here on the blog so if you miss anything it’s easily found in the main menu. You can catch up on my story so far if you like. My goal is to compile as much information on the subject as possible for anyone who needs reference material. Since the symptoms are often overlooked, misdiagnosed or simply accepted as part of life I want to offer you what I never had…Information.

When my symptoms started in Perimenopause I was completely clueless & struggling alone to figure out what was wrong with me. At times I was very frightened & in hindsight, I realize that was because I was blindsided. You may wonder, how could I not know what was happening to me? Well, that’s simple, nobody was publically talking about Menopause. Whether we’re embarrassed, ashamed or perhaps just confused by what’s occurring, it’s the silence doing the most harm. Let me tell you there are answers out there once you start talking to other women. Merely by reading the amazing comments on my Menoposts you’ll learn a lot. The vast range of side effects & varying degrees in which they present is daunting to say the least. Therefore every story is valuable & could ultimately be that single life-saving piece of information to help somebody out of a black hole. For instance one of my lovely readers left advice of her personal experience with tinnitus that directly helped me with one of my relentless symptoms.

In any case, I now have my specific symptoms under control with HRT at least for the time being. However that doesn’t mean I’ve left the conversation, there’s still work to be done. My aim remains the same, to lift the topic of Perimenopause & Menopause out of the shadows. Putting this life-altering subject on the table to move forward with what we learn from each other.

SMART FABRIC THAT CONTROLS HOT FLUSHES

Which brings me to my latest discovery. Technology specifically designed to help the most common of Menopausal symptoms, HOT FLUSHES. If you’ve experienced this phenomenon you know how debilitating it can be. I suffered from hot flushes before I got my HRT dose right & boy do I remember the feeling well, it aint fun. Even now I have the occasional mini flush, albeit much less severe. It’ll come on when I’m wearing a jumper or drinking alcohol or doing both at the same time, a common theme around Christmas no? But what of those women who don’t want to take hormones or can’t for medical reasons? How can they deal with severe & regular hot flushes? Should they tolerate the embarrassment of turning red-hot in the face & becoming absolutely drenched with sweat? Well not necessarily….

There’s a new brand on the block designed specifically for women in Menopause. With the help of science, BECOME has developed a material to control the extreme temperature fluctuations you get with hot flushes. Therefore when one hits like a tonne of bricks the fabric works to cool you down whilst simultaneously wicking away moisture. The heat is trapped externally so that when your body begins the rapid cool down it transfers the heat back to prevent you from getting the chills. Furthermore, there’s no need to worry about the whiffy sweat smell due to the anti-microbial technology that fights bacteria. Hoorah relief at last!

SIMPLY STYLING A TANK TOP

I’m thrilled with my trial of the black set & adore both the cut & fit of each piece particularly the knickers which did not ride up my bum at all. I absolutely hate when that happens don’t you? The vest top has put wearing a polo neck back on my style agenda. I tried this combination, with a hangover I might add, & remained as fresh as a daisy the entire day. Pretty impressive even without hot flushes right? However, I’ve not finished road testing just yet. I’d like a volunteer who suffers from excessive hot flushes to try the set out for us. If anyone’s up for the gig let me know in the comments below. I will then send out both the tank & pants to one randomly chosen volunteer in their colour of choice. After wearing them I would like to ask this reader a couple of questions about what they think of the technology & design. The following week I’ll publish this feedback in a short follow-up post for everyone to read. Additionally, if you’d like to make a purchase from BECOME be sure you’re subscribed here so I can personally email you an exclusive discount code. I’ve actually already bought another three pairs of the pants myself, one black & two biscuit, they’re so fab!

STYLE NOTES – The crew neck makes styling this tank quite simple as it sits beautifully under a blazer or shirt. Equally the high cut underarm is well suited as outerwear for warmer months. Which basically means you could wear it with anything you’d usually pair with a tank top. Thus far BECOME offer the tank & pants however there will be more styles in the near future. Watch this space…

Ah, the glory of menopause! I really have no idea why we deserve this as women? I feel like we’re being punished for something I’m yet to figure out what. Like you Michelle, my hot flashes are under control thanks to HRT. But a friend of mine who’s in her late sixties told me recently that due to medical reasons she can’t take any, so she was left with absolutely dreadful hot flashes for 15 years!!! Leaving menopause out of the picture, you look gorgeous there! And I can’t believe you actually own a phone with a wire, how cool is that! Lost of ❤️ xx Abby

I would love to be a trial user for the Become set… I suffer from really random hot flushes, so tend to wear layers so I can stip off! My usual lowest layer is a vest top, just in case! These things sound almost too good to be true…

Having only just come across you, it may already be too late – but thought I’d ask anyway!

    Thanks for all you’re doing.

Lucky me – no hot flushes. ButI don’t like the heating on most of the time. And if you could magic me an outfit that stops me walking into rooms, turning round and biting my lip as I wonder what I’m even doing in there, I’d love to hear about it.

And forgetfulness! Today I went for a swim and my other half was coming to collect me afterwards to go to town for something to eat. We ended up having to go back home again as I hadn’t packed a top to change into!

And lucky we did go home as I’d left the heating on; it had been my job to switch it off (and it would’ve been S. who put it on in the first place as I want to throw all the windows open). Actually, I did ask S. to check the heating before we left the house the first time, but he said that if I’was sure it was off then it was off. I think he was trying to show he trusted my memory, bless him, so he won’t be doing that for a while!

Arrrgh I know the feeling well Emerald! I do stuff like that allll the time, still, even on HRT! Oh well it makes for an interesting life doesn’t it? I just hope I don’t forget one of the children 😉 xx

I’d love to be a trial user. Really struggling with hot flushes. And why are they so random?! I’m a mobile hairdresser and the heat of the hairdryer together with clients central heating is doing me no favours. What I really want to do is stick my own head under a cold shower! 😅💦. Any advice is welcome

    • avatar
      MT

Hi, I would love to be considered for the trial,.
I have been suffering with hot flushes now for fifteen years and am aged 55,
I had breast cancer five years ago and had to stop hrt, I suffer continually throughout the day and am at my wits end, I haven’t had a social life for these past five years at all.
I live in a different part of the house from my husband as cannot stand any heat on at all. I’ve given up believing I can be helped.
    Please help.
    Jackie xxx

Hi Tina, apologies for my late reply there’s been a lot to get through. Gosh under & over active thyroid? What a nightmare for you Tina that’s terrible. I wish I could give everyone the set for free it really is great. Unfortunately I’ve picked someone else out of the hat but if you’d like to try the BECOME set click here for a discount code that will automatically be added at checkout for you. I know it’s not the answer to your particular issues but it will help with the sweats which is something at least. Good luck & please do let me know how you get on xx

Your posts on Menopause are SOOOOO brilliant, Michelle. I learn, I bookmark, I make notes, and I want to remember every comment! I’ve not reached menopause yet, but I know it is coming soon, and I feel so prepared for whatever comes my way. I’ve sent these posts to a few women younger than I am who are starting to see the beginning signs of menopause, so I’m trying to pay it forward! The technology behind this fabric sound great, and would be a great Christmas gift for someone in the Menopause, no?? xx

Maria | passion fruit, paws and peonies

I started with hot flushes but hadn’t realised at that point I was in my peri-menopause! They were mortifying and happened at the most awkward moments. Anything that helps women through them gets my vote! xx

    • avatar
      MT

Oh gosh Maria that’s exactly how it was for me too! In fact everything about Perimenopause came as a complete shock to me. xx

Oh what joy to be able to look like I’ve dressed for the season ( it’s so embarrassing walking around the shops in short sleeves sweating like a labourer ) Friends don’t understand why I long to be able to wear cosy jumpers or long sleeves or scarfs or high necks ………. my symptoms are horrendous some days and milder on others but combined with other issues I suffer with (PTSD, arthritis asthma) all these symptoms are exacerbated I feel in constant flux …… you start to progress with one thing but something else worsens. To an onlooker I must come across like one of the attractions at the fun fair where they arm you with a sponge mallet and you frantically bash the heads of moles popping up just thinking about the analogy brings me out in a sweat oh dear …….. I definitely will make a purchase but a trial would be amazing ……. Lesley

    • avatar
      MT

Oh blimey Lesley you are having a rough time, poor thing. I understand what you mean entirely! Is it not possible for you to take HRT even as a patch?
As for the trial set, I have picked a name out of the hat & I’m afraid it’s someone else. I really wish I could send everyone a free set now…Here’s the link to a small discount code if you’d like to buy the set anyway. It’s really worth it Lesley, as I said in my post I’ve actually bought more myself! I’ve pretty much replaced my entire knicker drawer hahahaha. xxx

Omg I’d love to try these! I’ve been suffering hot flashes and night sweats for 10 years now and I do not like to take medications. My hot flushes are so bad that my glasses completely fog over! LOL I laugh, but it’s rather annoying as I can’t see a thing without them.

    • avatar
      MT

Oh gosh that’s right my glasses did that too, I’d forgotten about it! I’m so sorry Lesley, I’ve randomly picked someone else out of the hat to trial the set. However if you’d like to buy it anyway (& I hope you do because it’s fab) just click here for the link including a discount code at the checkout. Keep me posted how you get on xx

Thrown headling into a chemo/post cancer meds induced menopause was a shock to the system for sure! There are a lot of us out there who do not see this coming and, at times, I’m not going to lie….it’s awful! If you’re still looking for testers then count me in. If not, then thanks for such an informative post and bringing this brand to my attention xx

    • avatar
      MT

Hi Anna, I think you’re amazing. You have been through such a lot & then to have Menopause to deal with as well! I wish I could give everyone a free set but unfortunately yours wasn’t the name I picked out of the hat. I do hope you give this set a try anyway as it’s absolutely brilliant. I’ve pretty much worn it on repeat since I got it & had to buy more! Click this link to go to the site & your discount code will be added automatically at checkout. Let me know how you get on xxx
